Rhododendron is a very prolific genus of plants with many species native to most areas north of the equator and over 28,000 cultivated varieties grown by gardeners. They are often grown for there flowers, rhododendron varieties, especially azaleas are very popular for gardeners as decorative small trees and shrubs.
They are known to be especially hardy and adaptable, especially the wild varieties, which are very common along the trails in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park– if you ever hike through, you won’t be able to miss them. Rhododendrons are good for areas with longer winters and late frosts. There is an especially cold-hardy new variety Rhododendron Pohjola’s Daughter which is hardy to zone 3. I’m planning on taking a little hiking trip this weekend, and the thought of seeing all those plants in the wild is always exciting– I try to see how much of it I can identify, and since it is still springtime, many things will be blooming.
Have a great weekend!
